DOUBLE DRY HOPPED VORTEX IPA Our original brewhouse was almost scattered to the winds by a tornado as we drove it from Virginia to the coast of Oregon in 2007. We’ve been harnessing the power of the elements ever since. April is Vortex Month - a celebration of firsts and bests and the wildness of the natural forces that could have crushed us before we even began. This month, we Doubled the Dry Hop to produce a fiercer, bolder, wilder version of this Northwest favorite. Vortex is a curiously sessionable Northwest IPA hand crafted in Astoria, Oregon. Hops: Simcoe, Comet, Chinook, Nelson Cryo, Bract 106, Columbus Cryo, Simcoe Cryo, Idaho 7, Helios CO2 Extract Malts: Rahr Pils TO THEE!, Rahr 2 Row, Linc White Wheat, Acidulated

Every once in a while, there is a moon so beautiful, so alluring, so awesome that we will wake our kids from bed to carry and lead them, grumbling, rubbing their eyes out onto our back porch. “Look at that moon,” we tell them as they shiver and scoot their half-asleep bodies closer to ours. Our youngest wraps her arms tighter around my shoulders. “That’s pretty,” they say, “can we go back to bed now?” In the late winter and early spring, we can sometimes hear an owl hooting, low and rhythmic, in a nearby tree.

A delicate blonde with a soft haze and a crisp, cracker-like finish. It lands dry but not bitter, floral with a gentle sweetness, and the lacing leaves the glass looking like a snowy hillside. It’s our first blonde, and we’re glad we finally dove in. This is the kind of balance and beauty we chase—elegant, simple, and quietly confident.
Set the distortion pedals and ambient guitar intro. Full roasted, full toasty, bitter dark chocolate and yet somehow creamy. Our brewer Aaron spent years brewing Czech beer styles and wishes they were a bit more prevalent. A bit like that metal band you’ve never heard of. Brewed using all floor malted barley and Saaz hops. So fire up your rig, turn the volume up to 10, not 11 that’s cliche. This is cerne, it’s coming for you in some sort of 15 minute progressive experience that has become rock and metal.
This beer is a carnival of flavor - a tribute to Mexican style lagers, but taken up a notch with one of the most popular American hop varieties. Citra is more frequently used in IPAs and in pale ales, but it can also be in any style if you don’t overdo it. This beer is a light drinker for the IPA fanatic and a gateway to IPA for the lager fanatic. Light and boldly citrusy, with flavors that don’t linger too long, make this beer highly drinkable.
Around the same time we were releasing the Public Lands brew, we couldn’t help but grab extra ingredients for a big batch of Pilsner. Built around one of our favorite barleys (Genie Pilsner), this batch shares some malt DNA with Public Lands, but the ratios, methods, and intention are entirely different. Since all the malt was sourced from Spokane Valley, we decided to keep it regional and pulled in hops grown entirely in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. We kept the boil bitterness gentle to make room for Lorien and Strata in the whirlpool, with a small dry hop layered in post-conditioning—a bit of a fancy move most pilsners skip on paper. But this one called for it.
